Kushtia Sadar Upazila is very prosperous in terms of trade and commerce. When rail communication was established with Calcutta in 182, Kushtia's communication with East Bengal by river and rail became convenient and trade and commerce became very prosperous. There are about 300 rice mills in Kushtia Sadar Upazila. The rice produced from the mills is being exported abroad by meeting the domestic demand.About 25% of the people of Kushtia Sadar Upazila are involved in various small and big businesses. Besides, the products of BRB Group of Industries located in Kushtia Sadar Upazila are of international repute. At present 3% of Kushtia people live below the poverty line which is the lowest in Bangladesh.
